How water softeners work

Hard water containing minerals like calcium and magnesium enters the water softener unit through the inlet valve.

Inside the softener, the water flows through a tank filled with resin beads charged with sodium ions. These resin beads are designed to attract and hold onto calcium and magnesium ions. As the hard water passes over the resin beads, the calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. This process effectively removes the hardness minerals from the water.

The softened water, now free of calcium and magnesium ions, exits the water softener and is distributed throughout the facility. This water is now suitable for use in applications where hard water could cause scaling and reduce efficiency.

Periodically, the resin beads become saturated with hardness minerals and must be regenerated. A brine solution (a high concentration of saltwater) is flushed through the resin tank. The brine solution displaces the accumulated calcium and magnesium ions, replacing them with sodium ions. The displaced minerals and used brine are flushed out of the system. The resin beads are now recharged and ready to soften more water.

We offer bulk salt handling systems for large water softener installations with a tanker salt delivery capacity of 8 to 40 tonnes. The salt saturator eliminates manual handling issues, making it a safer and more cost-effective option.
