How chlorine dioxide dosing systems work

1

Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is generated on-site using a precursor chemical reaction. Typically, this involves mixing sodium chlorite (NaClO₂) with an acid (usually hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid) in a reaction chamber or generator unit. The chemical reaction produces chlorine dioxide gas, which is highly soluble in water and stable in dilute solutions.
2

The chlorine dioxide gas or solution is injected into the water stream using a dosing pump or injector. This ensures precise control over the amount of chlorine dioxide added to the water. As chlorine dioxide is injected, it mixes thoroughly with the water to disinfect and treat it effectively.
3

Chlorine dioxide acts as a powerful oxidising agent. It effectively oxidises and destroys organic matter, bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants present in the water. Unlike chlorine, chlorine dioxide forms fewer disinfection by-products (DBPs) and maintains a residual effect, providing longer-lasting disinfection properties in the water distribution system.
4

The dosing system includes monitoring equipment to measure chlorine dioxide levels in the water. This ensures that the desired disinfection level is maintained within safe limits. Operators can adjust the dosing rate based on water quality parameters and demand to optimise disinfection efficiency.
